XONIA VOLCKMAR was born in 1956 in the Free State on route to Cape Town. She has always had a passion for drawing since practising her art on the walls behind the curtains at the age of five. At the tender age of seven she won an art scholarship to a studio in green Point, Cape Town. Her family then moved to the former Rhodesia, where she completed her junior schooling. During this time she won numerous awards at the Art Eisteddfods for juniors.
The family moved to Botswana and then on to Mafikeng, where Xonia completed her schooling, but unfortunately had no opportunity to study art.
In 1978 she became Mrs Stanton when she married her school sweetheart. The happy couple settled on a farm in the Groot Marico District. She is now the proud mother of three grown sons. During 1997 a bad drought forced the family to move to Mafikeng, where she met the wellknown watercolourist, Jill Gilbert, who offered art classes. After a few watercolour lessons she never looked back again.
Xonia is very happy to be back on their beloved farm which inspires her wild life and landscape paintings. She can also spend time with her grandchildren who live nearby. her wild life paintings have sold especially well in Brittain, Europe and as far as Canada.
Xonia still finds the time to teach informal art classes.
She works in oils, pastels and watercolour.
Images of her work will be added soon.
